Building Nelson Homes since 1991: Paul Brockie Builders
Paul Brockie began his dream of building houses as an apprentice at the age of 16 here in Nelson. By the time he was 21 Paul was a fully-fledged building contractor, working in Christchurch. He returned to Nelson with his young family a few years later. Times were tough in Nelson back then: with high unemployment it was difficult to find work, so Paul made the decision to go into business for himself. He applied for a $3,000 Government work start-up grant and in 1991 Paul Brockie Builders was born.
Driving a successful building company in a blue Morris van
In the early days, the bright blue Morris Minor van and the skills Paul brought to each project was the sum total of Paul Brockie Builders, which was run from the kitchen table and the spare room many years. From those small beginnings, Paul Brockie Builders Ltd has continued to grow and gain recognition in the building industry both regionally and nationally. The business became a limited company in 1998, and in 2002 Paul moved to his current premises at 146 Pascoe Street, Tahunanui.
Award-winning craftsmanship in building superior homes
Paul attributes much of his ongoing success in the building industry to the strong focus given to customer care which is provided by his skilled team of builders, qualified sub-contractors and administrators who all combine to form a very experienced and highly qualified team at Paul Brockie Builders. This is reflected by the numerous awards they have won over the years for superior craftsmanship in the building sector after joining and entering the Registered Master Builders in 1994.
Excellent service and outstanding workmanship the foundations of success
Paul is dedicated to helping people create their dreams and this underpins the company philosophy of providing excellent service and outstanding workmanship. Paul Brockie joined the Master Builders Association in 1994 and entered Master Builders Home of the Year awards, winning the "Fowler Bathroom Award". Paul Brockie Builders have continued to feature in the Master Builder awards in subsequent years, and achieving national recognition on numerous occasions.
"We believe that our customers deserve the best. We are honest, friendly and easy to work with – indeed, many of our happy clients have become our friends!" says Paul.

Meet the Team at Paul Brockie Builders
Paul Brockie – Managing Director

I left school after sitting School Certificate in 1977 to take up a 5 year (10,000 hour) apprenticeship and then completed my Trade Certificate. I moved to Christchurch in 1983 to contract build for 6 years then in 1989 decided to move back to Nelson to raise my young family. Struggling to find regular employment I decided to go in business for myself and in 1991 Paul Brockie Builders was created. Needless to say I love building! Today, happily married to my wife Beth, I love fishing and football, and golf – if I had the time! But my biggest joy comes from my business where I turn people’s dreams into reality and build friendships with my clients. This is what I find most satisfying in what I do.
Geoff McCullough – Company Manager
I am a registered certified builder with over 38 years experience in the industry, with 34 of those including project costing, project managing and managing companies. I have been involved in a wide range of residential and light commercial work, from design and build group housing, minor and major renovations, kitset housing, architecturally designed high-value homes and multi-million dollar unit developments.
I was born in Christchurch and have spent 30 years building in central Auckland. Seven years ago my wife and two teenaged daughters decided to move to sunny Nelson and I am pleased to be able to bring my experience and knowledge to the Paul Brockie Builders team. I love anything to do with the outdoors, fishing being No 1! And what a great place Nelson is for all those things.
Mike Barrett – Contract Supervisor
I started my apprenticeship as a carpentry/joinery in late 1969. I mainly worked on general housing, joinery and aluminium joinery. I had my own business for over 20 years, all in the building trade. I was pleased to be able to bring my experience in joinery to the Paul Brockie team. My interests and hobbies include rugby, soccer (if I can work out the off-side rule), fishing, boating and motor racing. I don’t like gardening or doing the dishes, cooking is okay, because I cook what I like to eat.
